If you are using Social Media sites in your marketing efforts, do you use Twitter?
Twitter seems to be an acquired taste; not everyone likes it!! It is a social media giant, becoming more and more successful everyday! But still people are saying ‘I don’t get it’, ‘I don’t like it’. What’s not to like? You can get as many FREE accounts as you like, you can brand them to your or your companies name, and you can get out there and put your name and business in front of thousands of people in a very short space of time.
If you don’t know what to say, look at what other people are saying! Take a Twitter course; there are hundreds out now for just a few dollars. Or just type it into google; Twitter tips! You will be amazed about how much you can find out quickly! And then get started. If you don’t get it right first time, so what! It’s a learning curve, and you will soon learn from your mistakes!
To give you some help here are a few Twitter tools I personally couldn’t do without:-
1 Buzzom is a wonderful tool for unfollowing those who do not follow you back. Although you have to do it one at a time, it’s really quick and easy. You can also use it to find new people to follow and to follow back anyone who is following you!
You can also reply, retweet and tweet from buzzom. As well as the free version, you can also upgrade to the paid version for lots of extra features.
2 Backtweets is a great service to find out who has been RTing your tweets. It’s always nice to thank anyone who retweets your tweets and to reciprocate.
3 Socialoomph is also a biggie. I think by now probably everyone already uses Socialoomph, (it used to be called TweetLater) but I thought I had better mention it for anyone who has missed it. Socialoomph lets you send an automated direct message to anyone who follows you, saying thank you or whatever you want it to say. Don’t just send your new followers to a sales page. Just don’t do it! It’s like asking a girl to marry you on your first date!
Just thank them for following you, and if you must send them a link, make it your blog or facebook page, not a sales page.
Socialoomph does much more than that though! You can schedule tweets, follow those people who follow you, view your messages and lots more. If you upgrade, you can even schedule status updates on Facebook!
One great tip, if you are using Twitter for your business and have the link to you website or blog showing on your Twitter Bio, is to drop the www part of your URL. Because Twitter only gives you a short space to put in your URL, more of your website name will show up on your bio. This makes people more interested to see where your link takes them and you will get more clicks as a result!
And one BIG mistake I see alot of people doing on Twitter is that when they start a message with a person’s name (eg @soocee), only you and the person you are sending the message to will see it! It will not show up in other peoples stream unless you write something in front of the @ sign!! As we are in business and want every tweet to show up in as many people’s twitter streams as possible, it means alot of people are missing out! This is something I missed for a long time!
Hope these tips and tricks help! And if you are still not using Twitter, grab a free account quickly because you are missing out big time!!

Wow…I was looking for these tips. I’m glad that now I’ll be able to reciprocate the people that re Tweet my stuff. Also probably get a business focused account too. Thanks for this info Sue…take care!

Hi Sue,
I’ve been using Twitter for a couple of years now and I didn’t know about the @ sign in the front of the tweets making them private! Learn something new everyday!
Great post. Only thing I would add is to use a link shortening service that also tracks clicks, such as budurl.com. It’s an excellent way to find out what works to get people to click on your links and what doesn’t. Sharpen your Twitter skills by monitoring results.
Best wishes!

Sue,
I’m starting to get a little “bored” with Facebook, and wanting to learn more about optimizing Twitter, so your post timing is perfect. Will definitely check out “backtweets” as it is good to thank those who are supporting us.

Thank You, Sue, for the great tips for Twitter.
Now I understand the use of the @sign better.
For me it is all about gradually implementing what I am learning.
Much appreciated.

Sue, Great post about Twitter. I have also been surprised at the number of people who refuse to use Twitter and don’t see the purpose, and make derogatory remarks about the tweets. I agree with you, “What’t not to like.” I will check out the sites you mentioned.
Warmly,

Hi Sue,
Thanks for the info. I am always interested in what others can teach me about using the power of twitter.
I agree with you about Socialoomph, it is a powerful tool and if you want to get maximum usefulness from your twitter accounts. I made a big mistake of not upgrading my account sooner. It is my best source of traffic to my site and it is all automatic.
I love the bulk twit uploader that allows me to put 100s of twits into my accounts and them recycle them over the days and weeks to come.
So it is important to get on twitter if your looking for a great source of targeted traffic.
Thanks for the Info and the encouragement to use it!

Thanks so much Sue. I have not been a big fan if Twitter in the past, but I believe it’s because I just didn’t understand it. And no I did not know about Socialoomph.
Thanks again,
Michael
Twitter is one of my favorite tools. Excellent tip about dropping the WWW, I too tell people that one!
Hi Sue:
Thanks for a great look at some of the Twitter tools out there. I think some people don’t like Twitter because it seems so labor intensive if you aren’t using tools to help you.
I’d also add that a link shortening service is a great idea. There’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to click through on a link because it went past the 140 character limit.
Live with passion and purpose,
Vanessa
That was a great tip for me about writing something in front of the @ symbol. I never knew that. Thanks Sue for that .
I Love Twitter! I use TweetDeck to keep track of everything and really like it’s simplicity and organised structure. I have made hugely useful business contacts and raised lots of money for charity by using Twitter. I am very selective about who I follow back though – I’m going for a very personalised stream and I also prefer not to send automated followups for the moment..but Socialoomph is supposed to be very good. This is a great post Sue!
Good tips. but I am still struggling with how to be efficient and effective. every time I investigate twitter it is a time eating monster for me.

I didn’t know about making the tweets private if you put the @ sign first. Thank you for that helpful tip. You learn something new everyday.

Great twitter tips Sue. Another great twitter tool is the use of lists to organize and monitor certain groups. It also helps to keep track of where you know that person from (like TSA for example).
I also just recently discovered the list tool on facebook which helps me tremendously to separate business from personal friends content.
Thanks for the great advice.

I have one site I use -> who.unfollowed.me
I use it drop those twits who search and follow those who have auto-follow setup just to unfollow a few weeks later. It is their way of building a huge twitter list.
You know, one of those Guru tips on how to build a huge list

Hey Sue,
Thanks for the Twitter tips!
I remember when I first heard about Twitter. I just didn’t get it.
I use to wonder why people would want to know every little thing someone was doing during the day.
I then realized the power of target marketing through it and it all started to make sense.
Thanks for the un-follow tip. I have been looking for something!

Hi Sue,
I didn’t know you had to write something in front of the @ for it to show up in everybody’s stream. Thanks much for the tip! It amused me when I signed up with Twitter originally with my personal account that I then found myself signing up with a ton of tools to manage that account. That was one of the things that made me move away from Twitter a bit, but now I have the biz account and have been moving back to it again and just using few tools with it and starting to try to at least work it into my routine even if it isn’t my favorite! – Rob
