You hear it said all over the internet! ‘The Money Is In The List’. And many people still think that is true. But the money is not in the list. It’s in the relationship you have with the list!! Just think about it. When you open your email account up, whose emails do you read first? People who you are interested in. People who send you free stuff; valuable free information which you can use to build your business. Things that maybe solve a problem you are having.
If someone constantly sends you only links to products and never anything of value, you will either fail to read their email or unsubscribe. As many of us only get round to unsubscribing 3 or 4 times a year, this means alot of unread or unopened emails. If you are anything like me, you just delete alot of your emails unread. All you have seen is who they are from! That is incredible if you think about it. Just the name of the person who sent the email either gives you a warm feeling or sends you cold!
So how do you go about building a relationship with your list? There are several things you can do to persuade people to open your emails.
Connect with them on a friendlier level. Send them an email early on just inviting them to connect with you on your blog and on your social media sites such as Twitter or Facebook. On Facebook particularly they can see photos of you, see how you are interacting with others and get more of a personal feel for you. If you do videos, these are very good at getting people to feel that they ‘know’ you personally.
Don’t make any other offer when you send this email, just the connection. Definitely do not try to sell them anything!
Try branding your emails more so that they are recognisable every time they arrive in someones email inbox. Maybe use the header from your blog as a header for your email so they recognise your brand.
You could also have a small photo of you against your signature, so your recipient knows exactly who the email is from.
Don’t just pitch and sell to them everytime you email them. Everyone wants to receive information which will help them to solve a problem that they have. But if everytime they receive the info there is a sales pitch they will quickly tire of opening your emails. So sometime just offer free information that might help them, or a free ebook or helpful video.
Many of the top internet marketers I know believe the best way to get a prospect interested is to email them everyday. This way, they will definitely know your name and know how valuable you are to them. It will also mean that anyone who is not seriously interested will be fed up of the constant emails and will unsubscribe.
So remember, if you can get a prospect to know. like and trust you, by connecting more personally with them and by giving great value, you will have a customer for life.

Hi Sue,
I’m new to the network marketing side of life but you’re right. It’s the same in any situation where you can have the best product, or cheapest, maybe even both, but if someone doesn’t like you or trust you…. They aren’t buying from you!
A good reminder for us all so thanks very much

Hey Sue,
What a pleasure to get a chance to stop by your blog. Love this perspective on email marketing. I would consider that the value is still in the list but depending on what kind of list you have will determine your success. Thanks for sharing this with us all.
Make it a great day!
God Bless,

Great stuff Sue,
Too often website owners are in a rush in building their list. This causes them to fail to reflect the warm, friendly feeling you have mentioned in your post.
There is no point in building a list if you don’t have that relationship there, because it is the relationship and trust that is going to get you the sales you want in your future emails.

Hi, I think your post will surely teach a lesson to those email marketers. Now email marketing is commonly used by businessmen but not all of them succeed. They should really care more about the feeling of the recipient. The existence of some useful email marketing services, such as Comm100 Newsletter—a tool that can send emails and newsletter effectively, makes it easier for marketer to send business emails to the inboxes of the targets. However, if they can’t come up with good email contents, the results may turn out frustrating.
Hi Sue,
That’s true, there are emails from people that automatically get read first because I go – gee, I like so-and-so, wonder what he has to say. And emails that get tossed or put into a low priority folder to get read later because such-and-such other person isn’t such a favorite. You have some great tips in there for connecting with people and branding yourself so that you connect with the person. I’ve started asking the person to send me a problem or a question or their blog or Twitter or Digg so that I can follow them back as well too so that they feel that it is less of a one way push from me to them and more of a conversation. In that way, too I get to hear about issues and concerns they have that help me to better target messages for the future as well. Plus, it’s more fun and feels nice to get to see what my visitors blogs and Twitter pages are like too! – Rob

Great info!
The list, as important as it is, is completely useless if your email doesnt get opened. If people arent taking the time to check out their stats and ratio they could be wasting a lot of time and money.
Like you said, identify what value you can provide and become recognized in the audiences inbox.
My friend has an campaign set up where people email her back and ask if that was a personal email she sent they are so good! This is something to model after.
Thanks for sharing. Have a great day!

Thanks a lot Sue for this post because it is so important for us marketers to realize that it really is about relationships. I don’t know if I’m quite ready to send daily emails to my list just yet though

This is so true. I get so irritated when somebody ads me to their e-mail list without my permission. I will immediately unsubscribe when someone does that. You headline caught my eye because I know how important list building is, but you are right we have to build relationships with our list. Thanks for the tips.
