 This is the 5th article in the series ‘what are the MLM basics for marketing online’.  Today we are discussing something which is central to all your efforts on the internet, your Blog.  Every company should have a blog nowadays; they are becoming more of a necessity than just an ‘extra’ that a company offers.  If you consider the basics for marketing MLM online, although everything you do online fits together, the very hub of your business is your Blog.

First of all, your blog needs to be self-hosted.  This means that it is yours and you pay a company to host it.  There are several free blog sites around, and whilst they are great for someone who is blogging for fun, if this is your home business, you definitely need your own.  This is because if it is a free site, they can close your blog down if they do not like something you do.  This cannot happen with a self-hosted blog.

I use a Wordpress blog, and although at first sight it seems quite complicated to set up, you soon make sense of it and find your way around the plugins and widgets!  However there is lots of help and support around, and generally someone will be able to help you with any problems.  It is also very easy to change themes, so you can keep your website fresh and interesting.

Your blog needs to be ever changing.  It needs regular fresh content in the form of articles and tips.  You can upload videos and just use it to let your customers and prospects know what is going on in the MLM world.

You should have a page telling your story of how you got into Network Marketing and what you have done in your life so far.  You could also have a page about any other hobbies or interests you have, to show people that you are a rounded person who they can trust.  Many people have a photograph of themselves up to help with branding, so they become recognised as a leader.

One thing you should definitely have on your blog is an opt-in form to capture a prospects name, email and possibly telephone number.  You could offer some free training or information to persuade them to opt in.  Always make sure that any content (in the form of an article or video) you put out on the internet, always has your blog URL on it.  This way, if someone enjoys your article and wants to know more about you, they can click on the link to your blog and maybe from there become a lead in your business.

Make it easy for someone to get in touch with you!  Without lots of links to your blog, it is just like an island in the middle of the internet.  Make sure people can find it!

This is the fourth in the series of MLM Basics For Marketing Online, and today we are looking into Autoresponders.  If, like me a few months ago, you have not got the foggiest idea what an Autoresponder is, then it is pretty much what it says!  It responds automatically to any requests you get for more information on your business. When you first start out online, and do not know the basics for marketing online, you may not think you need an autoresponder.  But once you start to generate leads on a regular basis, you will not have enough time to send out regular emails to all your prospects.

You would expect to pay about £20 a month for a decent autoresponder.  Much less than that and you would need to check them out fully to find out what you are being offered.  You can also get some free autoresponders, but you will find your emails are more likely advertising them than your business.

An autoresponder is where you begin building your list.  When someone enters their contact details into the form on your capture page or other website page, they are then on your ‘list’.  You can then send them regular newsletters or information on your product or business.  This will be fully automatic and will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  So if someone from the other side of the world fills in their contact details whilst you are asleep, your autoresponder will immediately respond to them, making sure your business online never closes!

If you have good copywriting skills, you can write your own emails.  Otherwise your autoresponder will probably give you some templates or help with constructing some.  If you have signed up with a system such as LeadSystemPro, as I have, you will have ready made emails which you will install into your autoresponder when you set up your system.  This will save your alot of time and effort.  You can, of course, personalise these emails yourself if you want to.

You can also send out extra ‘broadcasts’ whenever you want from your autoresponder.  If you have some new information  that comes to light which you want your list to know about, or you want to give them details of a webinar that is coming up, these broadcasts can be very useful.  It is very simple to do, once you have done a broadcast once or twice.  Some autoresponders also offer you the actual opt-in forms for you to put on your webpages.

An autoresponder is great for building  your credibility to your list.  A prospect generally enters their contact details because you are offering them something they want, such as a free training or more information.  Once they have that, then continue to get mail from you, they begin to trust you and recognise your name.  This may only happen after they have received several emails from you, and especially if you are offering them valuable information on something that interests them.

In effect, as well as saving your bucketloads of time and effort, your autoresponder is also converting your prospects into customers.  A definite neccesity for online marketing, in my opinion!

This tip in the series ‘What are the MLM basics for online marketing’ is all about YOU.  Because when you come online to market your MLM business, you don’t actually market your business, you market YOU. Online we use Attraction Marketing to attract leads to us rather than the outdated methods of contacting our family and friends.  To understand Attraction Marketing, you need to read Mike Dillard’s book ‘Magnetic Sponsoring’.  Mike will explain to you the whole concept of Attraction Marketing, so you can understand how to position yourself.

In learning the MLM basics for online marketing, branding yourself is one of the most important and fundamental things you need to do.  Those who fail to do this and start to pitch their business to everyone they know and plaster pictures of their juice all over will end up with very few friends on the social sites.  People hate being sold to, but they love to buy.  They just want the freedom to choose what they buy.

So forget everything you were taught in the old school of MLM, and start ‘branding yourself’.  This may sound strange or uncomfortable at first; you may want to hide behind your brand.  But eventually you will discover that everyone who is marketing online, irrespective of age or gender is marketing this way.  People buy from people they know, like and trust.  So you need to be seen and you need to connect with people.

The way to do that is to be valuable to people.  Do not try to pitch you business, but instead offer any help you can give.  Try to always give value.  You may worry you have nothing to give, but you give away information.  As you start to learn about marketing on the internet, you share it with others.  This starts to brand you as a leader or a trainer.  It also reinforces what you have just learnt, because you are writing about it or doing a video about it.

You also need to consider your brand when you buy domain names for your websites.  Your main website or capture page is usually something with MLM in it, and is your brand, like mine is PrimeMLMTraffic.  You need to put some thought and perhaps some research into the name, and see what is available.

For your blog, most people use their own name.  This is fine if you have an unusual name, but if your name is more popular, it may not be available.  In this case you would add something to it, such as WhoIs….. or WorkWith….  You need to get your name out there as much as possible, so think about every site (such as Facebook or Twitter) you join and try to incorporate your name in your site name.

All this will help you to begin branding, ‘YOU INC’!

This is Tip 2 in the article series ‘What Are The MLM Basics For Marketing Online’.  The first tip was that you need a system in order to market your business online.  Without a system you would be spending a great deal of time and money trying to work out what to do.  The next MLM Basics For Marketing Online Tip is also a biggy!  Once you have a system in place, you need to get some Training!  This is the biggest problem in Network Marketing.  Although it is called ‘marketing‘, no-one give you any marketing training.  And when you bring your business online, it is all about the marketing.

So where do you go for training?  Well if you took tip number 1, getting a system, you would now have access to training.  Without the system, you could maybe try to find a mentor online who would be willing to give up his time to coach you.  Otherwise you would have to learn from your mistakes, just like a huge number of people do online.  The trouble with this is that you will probably do what you were taught offline and constantly spew out your information about your business.  This is the way the amateur networkers work.  It leads to people removing you from their lists of friends, because they are fed up of being sold to.

Training is hugely important for marketing on the internet. 

If you consider that you would have to be trained for any new job, then it is just the same on the internet.  You are very unlikely to know exactly what to do on your first day online.  Everything you have been taught about the ‘old school’ methods of Network Marketing does NOT work online! On the internet we use Attraction Marketing to generate leads. We do not chase prospects around, we do not cold call anyone and we do not pester people as they go about their work.  Prospects come to us, because they are attracted to us, not the other way round.

The system I use, Lead System Pro, has an unbelievable amount of training in the back office. 

In fact one of the trainings, on Facebook marketing, is so popular that it attracts hundreds of people everyday to find out about our system!  Because marketing on Facebook is so popular, and so many people are joining Facebook everyday, anyone with a business wants to find out how to market there.  The Article Marketing training is also very highly sought after.

As well as trainings on all the social media sites, you will also need training about posting adverts, putting up banner adverts, how to do paid marketing such as pay-per-click and how to actually use Attraction Marketing.  Once you have studied some of the ways to attract leads, you can start to generate leads into your system everyday.  The best thing to do when you are just starting is to learn to master just one or two methods of lead generation.  When you are getting 10-20 leads a day from your efforts, you can continue to do that method, but also get some training on another method and stick at that until you have mastered that one too.

Eventually you will have built up several different ways to attract leads into your business.  But all this takes time.  Do not give up after a month or two, because it does take time to understand marketing online completely.  You may feel that you are doing everything you have been taught, but you are not getting the results you hoped for.  It could just be one little tweak that makes all the difference.  Just go over the training again, and see if you can pick up something you may have missed the first time. 

And then just keep going!

If you are asking yourself ‘what are the mlm basics for marketing online’? then you have come to the right place, because this is the first article in a series I am writing to explain the mlm basics for someone starting online marketing.  When I came online to market my mlm business, I had no idea what I should be doing and wasted absolutely loads of time trying to understand the mlm basics for marketing online.

The very first, and most important thing that you need online is a system.  Without a system you will spend loads of time, money and effort trying to figure out lots of different things.  Apart from the training which a system will give you, you need to know the tools necessary to market online, you need to learn copywriting skills and you will need someone to troubleshoot for you regularly for the first few months.  Learning to market you mlm business online has a huge learning curve and you can waste a considerable amount of time if you are not willing to invest in a system.

I began by following someone who seemed to know what they were doing, and whom I liked.  I soon realised that this person used a system, and I quickly plugged into that system.  I was amazed; this system blew me away.  For starters there was a ‘getting started’ section, which walked me through setting up my system, with instructional videos.  Not being much of a techie, and being, well, shall we say an ‘older’ lady, this probably took me longer than some people who perhaps grew up with computers or were more tech savvy.  But it didnt matter if I had to watch some of the videos more than once.

After I had everything set up, I made a plan of which marketing training I would start with, then began watching the amazing training videos.  After each section you have learnt so much about marketing that you can go out and begin working on generating those all important leads.  And now, months down the road I am generating leads everyday, and more importantly I am still learning everyday from this system.  Every week we have a training call webinar, usually with a guest speaker, and also a live coaching call where the leaders are calling leads in their system to show us how to prospect.

I have still not used everything in my arsenal in the back office with regards to training.  I believe when my first year is up, I will still not have used every resource they have available, and more and more trainings are being added regularly.  We have our own online community where you can meet other members in the system and where lots of newbies ask questions about the system.  We also have live skype chat with many of the leaders in the system.

So there you have it, the first and most important thing you need to market online is a system. Do you need help choosing an MLM opportunity?  So many people get recruited directly into one company by one of their friends that they don’t get the chance to choose.  Often these people did not know of the existence of MLM or Network Marketing as it is sometimes called.  However, if you do need help choosing an MLM opportunity, you need to do some ‘due diligence’ on the companies you are interested in, as well as some soul searching before you can find the right opportunity for you.

Many people say that the company does not matter, but it really does on so many levels.

1.  Do you love the products?  Would you happily sell them to your Granny?  Because if you would not, will you be able to happily sell them?  You need to have complete confidence in them, otherwise people will be able to see right through you.  Ask yourself this; would you want to use these products even if you were not in the company?

2.  What is the market like with regards to these products?  If, for instance, it is the latest super juice, have you considered market saturation?  There are just so many companies out there right now, selling the latest antioxidant super juice that I for one, even though I have sold a juice in the past and loved it, would not want to be involved in one nowadays. (And yes, I still drink it!)  Nowadays I would rather go for a product with a wide open, untapped market, something which is a powerful, current, and on trend.

3.  Low start up costs are very important.  So many people just cannot afford to invest a very large sum of money in something about which they know very little, especially in a recession.  Apart from anything else, low start-up costs are one of the best things about an MLM opportunity.  It makes it affordable to start your own business.  Many people could not afford to get involved in their own business, so MLM is accessible to many more people.

4.  Retention rate is very important in choosing an MLM opportunity.  If the retention rate is low it will affect your residual income.  The problem is that retention rates in MLM are very rarely high.  How much better would it be to know that the majority of people you put into your business would stay there, year in, year out?  If a company has a low retention rate, you can expect to have to find lots more distributors in order to get paid the same amount as you would in another company with a better retention rate!

5.  Your compensation plan is very important.  There are so many different compensation plans out there today, it is difficult to know what it best; unilevel, binary, matrix?  All you can do is find out what the company that you are interested in has and then do some research on it.  Unless you know alot about many different compensationn plans, you will mainly need to use your common sense.  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

6.  Check out the management of the company.  Are they well-known and liked?  Do they have a proven track record in business, either in MLM or direct sales?  Make sure you also do some research on the company.  Find out how long it has been operating; many MLM companies go under in their first year.  Check out the growth it has had, what assets it owns and if it is well thought of.

7.  Lastly check out MLM Watchdog.com for lots of information on MLM’s to help you in choosing an MLM.

3  They have discovered that they can find the correct mindset, and can encourage themselves to keep only positive thoughts in their heads.  They have decided to let go of all their negative thoughts and to take responsibility for their lives, their decisions and for their future.

4  They have learned to dream big.  Life teaches us to slowly give up on our dreams one by one, and live a life of mediocrity.  Those in the 3% are ignoring these rules and refuse to be bound by them.  They have discovered that whatever they can dream about, they can achieve, if they allow themselves to.

5  They have realised that in order to grow and achieve their dreams, they need to change.  They have embraced this change!  Everyday they are studying, reading, watching powerful information videos, that are slowly changing the way they think.  They are growing everyday, reaching their true potential.

6  They are setting goals.  Long term goals, monthly, weekly and daily goals.  Goals for their personal life, the work life, their social life.  And they are working daily on fulfilling these goals.  Goals which are very specific, are written down, have time limits and which are measurable.  And when they reach these goals, they are setting more.

So where do you stand.  Would you rather watch Coronation Street?  If so fine, enjoy. But if you feel that there could be more to life; more time, more money, more freedom, then don’t you owe it to yourself to discover whether you have what it takes to be one of the 3% who work hard on themselves and on their dreams to succeed in life.

If you are not prepared to grow and change, then please do not bother with MLM.  Too many people join a Network Marketing business without realising it could change their life.  And when things get a little scary they back down and run for the comfort of their home.  Thats fine, everyone is different.  So, do you have what it takes?? Or will you just sit back in your armchair and believe the hype??

Prepaid Legal Leads can be difficult to find in your warm market.  Although your family and friends may be interested in getting legal cover, they are unlikely to want to join the business unless they are very business minded or entrepreneurial.  Once the warm market is exhausted, the options for generating Prepaid Legal Leads have always been buying leads or approaching your cold market.

Prepaid Legal is one of the oldest, most well established and successful Network Marketing companies around, but it has one downfall.  By not using the internet to help their associates generate Prepaid Legal leads, they will always lose associates who are discouraged by not enrolling people into their business.   Once the associates have approached their warm market about the business, they will need to go out and find other people to talk to.

Prepaid Legal actually became a Network Marketing company in 1983, but the company really started in 1969 when the founder of the company, Harland C Stonecipher was involved in a car accident, which left him with legal bills.  Prepaid Legal has over 1.5 million associates.  In the last quarter of 2009, the number of associates joining this company rose by 89.4% on the previous year!  Of course, more people do join Network Marketing companies in a recession, but even allowing for that, that percentage is incredible.

For around $20 a month, you get access to their lawyers for your legal problems.  Some companies purchase this protection and give it to their employees as an additional benefit.

Prepaid Legal encourages associates to use ‘Old School’ methods of prospecting such as approaching your family and friends and the three foot rule.  Sadly few Network Marketing companies have an online system to teach their associates how to find qualified leads.  Some people try buying ‘Legal leads’ but the majority of these leads are old, or have been used several times already.  They rarely work and are usually not targeted.

The modern way to generate Prepaid Legal leads is to use a system online which shows you step by step how to market and how to set up your own attraction marketing system to magnetically draw leads to you without using the out-dated methods usually associated with Network Marketing.  This means you will have access to far more people using the internet, because you are connecting with people all over the world, rather than just in your local area.

Very few Network Marketing companies teach their associates how to market their businesses, despite it being called Network “Marketing”!  Without marketing skills, people get easily discouraged and then leave the business.  However this does not happen if you have a system, because as long as you are prepared to work hard and study hard, you will have the principles by which to build a massive business.

I myself have only been marketing online for a few months, but can generate leads everyday, because I am learning the principles of attraction marketing from the system I belong to.  Many of the methods I use are free or cost very little money although there are some paid methods which we learn as well.  I have generated more leads online in a few months than I ever did in 6 years of marketing offline!!

When my network marketing company finally got on the internet and gave us all a website, we were so excited.  We knew everyone made money on the internet, and we thought, wow, this will transform our MLM business!  We expected lots of customers to ‘come across’ our website on the internet, and prepared ourselves for an upsurge in business!  We even paid for a recruiting website ourselves, which we thought may get us a trickle of interested leads.

Traffic to go to our website never really entered our head.  I suppose we thought that people would accidentally find our site and be so interested they could not help themselves but to sign up or buy products!  Obviously we were giving our several hundred cards a week too, with the details of our sites on, so we were sure we would have results.  And we did.  Yes, at least 5 leads filled in their details on our site.  Unfortunately three of them were spam, as we now call it; idiots we called them at the time.  And the other two were unqualified people who thought we were in the ‘get rich quick’ brigade!

Now we know the secret MLM tip! Several years on, and with so much more experience of working on the internet, I regard these early attempts at internet marketing with a smile.  We knew so little.  Nowadays I find it amusing that Network Marketing companies still give out these lovely little replicated websites to their distributors.  I understand completely that it is their way of holding on to the content of these websites.  Obviously they do not want to be taken to court for their distributors over-zealous descriptions of their products benefits!

So my question to all you who are in MLM now is this:

 Do you realise that your company website is a waste of time? 

And do you know that you need to have your own website or at least a capture page, if you want to sponsor reps online?  The problem is that search engines, such as Google, hate company websites because there are so many of them all over the internet and they all have the same information.  Therefore it will not rank them, so they never show up on the first page, where people might click on the link and visit your site.  Google likes webpages to have original content, and it likes it to change regularly. Company websites are stagnant.  They have no new content, so will not rank highly.

Therefore if you are fishing around on the internet now, wondering how some people manage to sponsor other people online; your company website is not the answer.  You need to learn how to set up a capture page to get peoples details, how to attract them to you in the first place, what to do with them once you have them, and how to get them to join your business.  All in all, you need a system to follow, unless you have a mentor who will show you it all, step by step.  Because believe me, there is a pretty steep learning curve.  But it is well worth the effort, because it knocks offline prospecting into touch!
